Learn how to test for internal parasites in livestock. Monitoring parasites is one of the most important tools for maintaining healthy livestock. In this practical training workshop you will learn how to collect, prepare and analyse faecal samples using your microscope, identify common parasite eggs, and interpret results to make better worm management decisions. This course is ideal for goat, sheep, alpaca, cattle and small farm owners, as well as anyone wanting to learn how to perform their own faecal egg counts at home. Faecal egg counting is widely used to measure parasite burden and guide treatment decisions, helping producers avoid unnecessary worming and slow the development of resistance to drench chemicals. This course puts you on the front foot when it comes to knowing where your herd sits. Full Day - Theory + Practical $132 per person – includes morning tea & lunch For those wanting hands-on experience performing their own fecal egg counts. Includes: Morning Session *Full theory session & booklet *Live microscope demonstration *Parasite identification overview *Sampling and management strategies Afternoon Session *Hands-on microscope use- using your own microscope *Guided sample preparation and counting Participants are required to bring their own microscope for the practical session. Please wear clean closed in shoes, clothes that can get dirty but have not been touching other livestock since washed, a hat, water bottle and a keen to learn attitude. Max 6 Participants Participants must have their own microscope. You will need 40X magnification (for Whitlock slides) and 100X (for McMaster slides). Most basic microscopes have this capacity although optics improve with cost. The most important thing is to have a mechanical stage for moving a counting chamber around as you need to be able to see the entire slide in the field of view, some stages on smaller microscopes are not big enough to give you the movement required.
